Backstory

Panaya was born to the Tumet tribe in the Azim Steppe. The prevailing culture for this tribe is to put their children through an aging ceremony where they are tied to a tree and left there, to eventually rejoin the tribe as a fully realized adult. Unfortunately for young Panaya, she was born with a weak constitution, so when it came time for her coming of age ceremony, she was unable to untie herself before the tribe was so far away she had no hope of catching up. Barely ten years old, unnamed, starving and confused, Panaya wandered to the coast, fully expecting to die. Just then, a trading ship sailed by and saw her sitting all by herself. They took to the shore to investigate and found her completely at ease, but desparetly malnourished. After deliberation, they decided to take her aboard and gave her food and water. She's nursed back to health by the entire crew, including an Arkarsodara crewman. Panaya wakes to see these strangers and fears for her life, especially towards the Arkarsodara she has never seen and has only ever heard horror stories about, but eventually overcomes her fear and relaxes into life on the open ocean. The crew eventually makes shore at Thavnair, where two of the crew members Fakeer and Hanabi Qa'azki decide to adopt her as their own. After a full year of rest and recouperation, she's given the name Panaya Qa'azik. Soon after she's well enough to begin her education, which she takes to quickly and enthusiastically. Her favorite subjects include different cultures, arcanist mathematical equations, and efficiency for trade lines. Her parents often run merchant vessels through the Ruby Sea, and thus have ties to the Confederacy. Through them, she's learned a lot about how the world works outside of the Steppe. Particularly, the value of gil, and makes her life's mission to make enough gil to pay back her parents and their vessel for rescuing her. Her initial trip to Limsa Lominsa was for one of these monetary ventures, and the rest is history.

Relationships

(Highlights)
G'RAHA TIA:
One of her first friends in Eorzea after coming to Mor Dhona on a research loan. They bickered constantly and liked to rile each other up, but during the events of Crystal Tower she regains a close connection to the idea of him. During Shadowbringers, she is mad about his secrecy and evasiveness with her considering their history. She doesn't truly regain her trust for him until the end, where she then resolves to never lose him again.
HAURCHEFANT:
After spending so many months feeling out of place both for her racial identity and cultural heritage. Haurchefant was the first person who seemed interested in knowing her as a person, and not just as the fabeled Warrior of Light.
YSAYLE:
Absolute love at first sight. She loved Ysayle's passion and heart and love for the Dravanians, and her dedication to spreading word of Ishgardian - and by extension Eorzean - hypocrisy. Someone she'll never forget.
ALISAIE:
A very close friend. Both of them like research and action, so they have a lot to talk about. Panaya often goes to Alisaie for tips on how to improve her physical capabilities, especially once Alisaie develops more of her Red Mage skills.
ALPHINAUD:
Originally she found him incredibly insufferable, but they've been through so much together that she can't imagine going through life without him. Horrendously soul-bonded friends.
THANCRED:
Before Shadowbringers, she mostly thought he was a mildly amusing older man, much like those she knew in the Confederacy, but her opinion changes when he sees how he treats one of the significant players in Shadowbringers. She gives him the cold shoulder until well into the Eden raids, where she softens back up to him. Still dislikes the flirting, though.
ZENOS:
She wants to kill him so bad. He sees parts of herself in him that she hates. In another life, they could have been attached at the hip. She'll only be satisfied when he's bled dry.
URIANGER:
She hates Urianger. For a while, she thinks he's mostly an unassuming book nerd, but time after time she realizes that she just doesn't trust him and doesn't want to be near him, ever. Were it not for her beloved Alisaie's affection, she would have Bahamut blasted him off the dirt of planet.

Asana: Rose of Versailles/Lady Oscar Bifauxnen prince. Panaya concocts plays in her head where Asana saves her from peril.
A’didas: She likes cooking with him! He's got dad/older brother vibes as compared to Asana, and she likes hanging around him. Is constantly trying to figure out how to get him to drink water.
Altai: Probably the most accurate real interpretation of a person, but she also sees him as more pouty than grouchy because of the brother sister type relationship.
Keukeureto: He is King Arthur to her. Gilgamesh. Incredible hero of times. Probably idealizes him too much. She likes following him on his fishing ventures since she likes being on the water.
Luchik: He's so tall compared to her so she mostly just sees a lot of pectoral. They usually go on random excursions for a little extra gil and have a wild time every time.
Enkhtuya: Panaya has a Xaela complex so whenever she sees another one she starts feeling super insecure, but Enkh is a really nice so she gets all confused. Enkh keeps gifting her fish and it's certainly making an impression.
Raiden: He reminds her of her cousins back home in Kugane! So she likes hanging out with him and shooting the magic shit. He's one who actually listens to her talk about ""arcanist math"" and she appreciates it.
Bonus Friends!:Gremlloyd Hotgo: A "friend" she meets in the hills of Mor Dhona that follows her home one day. She's perpetually annoyed by him, but he sees her as an older sister and she can't seem to shake him.
Radimir Astolla: A friend she goes into Palace of the Dead with!
